FrontBridge Adopts Sender Policy Framework and Future Sender ID Standard to Authenticate Email Senders

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- June 29, 2004 -- Managed Service Leader Enhances Message Filtering to Tackle Problem of Forged Sender Email

FrontBridge Technologies Inc., the leader in enterprise message management and email security, today announced that it has joined the fight against forged email by adopting the Sender Policy Framework (SPF) standard that will become part of the industry-backed Sender ID initiative. Sender ID, created by the merger of Microsoft's Caller ID proposal with the complementary AOL-championed SPF, attempts to reduce spam by stopping fraudulent email senders from spoofing domain names on outgoing emails to maintain anonymity. Last week Sender ID was sent to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for consideration as an industry wide standard for email authentication as part of the IETF's efforts to define effective industry email standards to address the problem of spam.

With the adoption of SPF, FrontBridge will offer its 1,800 enterprise customers a fully-managed service for the implementation of SPF, adding preventative technology to guard against fraudulent inbound email, such as phishing scams and common spam. Additionally, enterprises that use FrontBridge's TrueProtect Outbound Services will benefit from the reputation protection and brand preservation derived from SPF publishing.

Sender ID allows mailers to publish the IP addresses of their servers used to send outgoing mail. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can check email messages against a published domain registration record. Email that uses a forged or spoofed address can be easily pinpointed and denied delivery.

FrontBridge supports SPF lookups to authenticate senders and will tune its spam blocking rules to take advantage of this valuable information. In addition, FrontBridge will also publish SPF records for its own domain to ensure that messages sent via the FrontBridge SMART Network(TM) of distributed and load-balanced data centers arrive to their intended recipients without delay. These enhancements will potentially make a considerable dent in spam volume that has grown to epidemic proportions. According to FrontBridge traffic analysis, spam accounts for more than 83 percent of total email.

"We're advancing the fight against spam -- moving from spam protection to prevention -- with support for SPF and Sender ID," said Dan Nadir, vice president of product management for FrontBridge Technologies. "The industry acknowledges that spam protection has limits on its success. Our emphasis on preventative measures, such as sender authentication, reputation and accreditation can stop a much larger volume of fraudulent messages, allowing us to reduce spam volumes, helping enterprises and increase productivity."
