BearCom Assists in Interoperability Solution for City of Columbus
GARLAND, Texas, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BearCom, nationwide equipment, rental and service provider of wireless communication solutions has been awarded and is currently fulfilling a large order for the City of Columbus. Columbus recently purchased 339 EFJohnson Model 5100 portable radios through BearCom that will operate on the existing State of Ohio radio network called MARCS (Multiple Agency Radio Communications System) -- an 800Mhz, 180 site, state-wide Motorola SmartZone(R) trunking system. This regional interoperability solution is designed to provide communications across a contiguous seven-county area in Central Ohio to meet the urgent demands created by a natural disaster or large emergency. It is the first completed communications effort of this nature for the State of Ohio. Additionally, BearCom was chosen by the City of Columbus because of their engineering experience with large wireless two-way radio infrastructures, and because of their competitive pricing.
Maari Adams, BearCom account executive for The City of Columbus explains, "The City chose the EFJohnson radio because of its compliance with APCO 25 (A.K.A. Project 25 or P25-a radio standard resulting from public safety interoperability requirements), and because of the equipment's compatibility with the existing City's and County's SMARTNET(R) systems by Motorola.
The BearCom-supplied portable radios were purchased using federal grant monies and will bring seven contiguous counties together where previously cohesive communication was not possible due to an existing variety of incompatible radio systems and frequencies. This new communication solution will allow key first responders, including fire, police, medical, and other public safety officials, to speak with one another -- a solution that is vital in saving lives when seconds count.
One hundred of these units were used in a mock statewide interoperability drill in Orient, Ohio this past October. Greg Eberenz, General Manager for BearCom's Columbus branch expounds, "The not-so-distant attacks on American soil have served to teach us all to 'expect the unexpected,' and leading-edge wireless technology is now playing an even greater role in helping us all to be more prepared. Interoperability is in its genesis, and BearCom is proud to provide solutions that can potentially save the lives of many first responders and those they so heroically serve."
