OpenIB Alliance Announces Windows Software Stack Development for InfiniBand Architecture; Standard Windows Stack to Spur Broader InfiniBand Deployments
SEATTLE --(Business Wire)-- April 25, 2005 -- The OpenIB Alliance today announced plans to develop a single software stack for InfiniBand(R) in Windows(a) environments, with support from Microsoft. The group, supported by leading industry vendors, was founded last year with the mission to deliver InfiniBand software stacks for clustered server environments. The upcoming Windows stack will extend Windows based InfiniBand fabric potential within HPC and datacenter deployments.
"The OpenIB Alliance's development of a single, certified software stack for Windows is a major milestone for InfiniBand architecture, and we're thrilled to be a part of that progress," said Russ Hawkins, CEO of InfiniCon Systems, and OpenIB Alliance member. "Customers demand interoperability, and the OpenIB Alliance has now enabled this key capability for Microsoft environments."
The software stack will be defined and developed by OpenIB Alliance participants, consistent with the requirements of Windows operating systems, including complete drivers and upper layer protocols for HPC, storage and data center networking applications. In addition, the OpenIB Alliance intends to ensure that the stack achieves Microsoft's WHQL certification.
"This announcement represents another proof-point of the momentum for InfiniBand architecture in the HPC arena. A single Windows-based software stack gives end users the confidence of InfiniBand solution interoperability and extends the capability of Intel Architecture based InfiniBand clusters," said Tom Macdonald, InfiniBand Trade Association steering committee co-chair. "The InfiniBand Trade Association applauds the efforts of the OpenIB Alliance to enable interoperable InfiniBand deployments within the world's most popular operating system environments."
The Cornell Theory Center in Ithaca, New York, has agreed to host the software repository for InfiniBand Windows stack development.
"The delivery of a single standard Windows stack for InfiniBand technology will mark a major milestone for the InfiniBand industry," said David Lifka, Cornell Theory Center chief technical officer. "As a leading institution of HPC clustering technology, Cornell looks forward to working with the OpenIB organization in the development of this key ingredient for InfiniBand clustering solutions."
