Says Serena Williams, "ACS State Healthcare Solutions should be commended for the outstanding job they are doing to improve the quality of dental health for the children of Georgia."
The program provides free dental screenings and education to underserved children throughout the state. The Initiative is in partnership with the Georgia Dental Society (GDS) and the North Georgia Dental Society (NGDS).
Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease -- five times more common than asthma. To combat this problem in the State of Georgia, ACS State Healthcare Solutions launched its Georgia State Dental Outreach Initiative in Atlanta in June 2004. We have since successfully launched this Initiative in Savannah, Albany, Decatur, Cordele, Augusta and Macon
"As corporate residents of Georgia, we are concerned about the health and well-being of our neediest children," said Harvey Braswell, Group President of ACS State Healthcare Solutions. "Together with our partners, we hope to teach these children that practicing good dental hygiene now will have a profound impact on their health for years to come."
The ACS State Healthcare Solutions Dental Initiative will include seminars at participating schools, churches and community facilities. During each event, students will receive critical education, a dental screening and a gift bag containing a toothbrush, T-shirt, toothpaste and dental education material. In addition, children will receive a screening evaluation and a recommendation report to share with their parents.
For many children, the ACS State Healthcare Solutions Dental Initiative screening will be their first dental check-up. In fact, American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) state that children from low-income families are less likely to see a dentist regularly and suffer twice as many dental cavities as their peers. In addition, pain and suffering due to untreated diseases lead to problems in eating, speaking and paying attention in school. ADA and AAP also state that 51 million school hours are lost each year as a result of dental-related problems.
"As the Medicaid administrator for the state of Georgia, we feel a corporate obligation to help reverse the devastating problems caused by lack of access to routine dental care," said Dr. Leo McKay, Chief Operating Officer of ACS State Healthcare Solutions. "The ACS State Healthcare Solutions Dental Initiative is our way of reaching into communities across the state to help every Georgia child have a bright smile."
