Expect a learning curve for `FFXI'
(Orange County Register, The (CA) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Originally released on the PC and PlayStation 2 a few years ago, "Final Fantasy XI" isn't exactly a new game. Those not familiar with the installation process of this title will be in for quite a shock when they realize it can take up to four hours before you can actually start playing. But don't let the lengthy procedure deter you. If you can stick with it, you'll find the experience gets noticeably better.
The first jarring thing you'll notice about the game is that the graphics aren't exactly what you would expect from the Xbox 360, especially if you compare it to the recently released role-playing game "Oblivion." However, keep in mind that this isn't a brand-new game.
Aside from the graphics, the gameplay of "FFXI" is a mixed bag. If you are new to massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) in general, be prepared for a daunting learning curve. It will take a majority of players quite some time before they figure out what to do and how to do it.
Fortunately, most of the players on any given server will lend a helping hand if you ask politely. Once you get the hang of the gameplay mechanics you'll find that most of your time spent in "FFXI" will be used to level up your character(s) in a party of up to six people.
When all's said and done, "Final Fantasy XI" is most enjoyable when you are adventuring in a party with friends. With a monthly fee of $12.95 after the free initial month, dedicated gamers will likely get the most out of this title. Casual gamers need not apply.
