SMSC's KBC1122P device provides several key features to the platform, including the embedded controller, PS/2 keyboard and keyboard scan matrix functionality. With an integrated Direct Battery Management (DBM) system incorporating SMSC SentinalAlert!(TM), four programmable Pulse-Width Modulator Outputs (PWMs) and three fan tachometer inputs, the KBC1122P provides for a complete hardware monitoring and control solution. The system also has integrated consumer IR (CIR) receiver functionality on-platform rather than being supported through an external USB-based dongle, providing for a lower system cost. The KBC1122P is a member of a pin compatible family of embedded controllers which provide the flexibility for notebook manufacturers to choose the device that best suits their consumer, commercial or media center based platform.

"SMSC's embedded controller plays an important role in our 8222J system, performing many of the interface functions, such as CIR for remote control access and 'instant on' support for an enhanced consumer experience," said Ricky Kuo, Senior Product Manager at Mitac Technology Corp. "The pin-compatible nature of this device also allows us the flexibility to quickly bring products to market in various segments while leveraging SMSC's integrated hardware and software on Intel's notebook motherboards."

"We're pleased to see industry leaders such as Mitac adopt our embedded controller solutions for their notebook PC platforms," said Rolf Mahler, Director of Product Marketing at SMSC. "Our focus on the mobile computing space has allowed SMSC to develop and deliver differentiating technologies, such as our system monitoring features and Vista-supported CIR, to better support our customers in this market."

"The latest effort from SMSC and Mitac demonstrates the ongoing industry support to simplify the development of PC notebooks," said Joel Christensen, General Manager of Channel Mobile Boards Operation, Intel Corporation. "Intel mobile motherboards are designed to optimize the performance of Intel processors while delivering reliable next generation technology, value added features and easy integration."

Key Features of SMSC's KBC1122P:

-- The KBC1122P is an integrated Keyboard/System Management Controller that incorporates a high performance 8051 Micro-Controller, LPC Bus Interface, Firmware Hub Interface and integrated Super I/O/LPC Resources. The KBC1122P is powered by two separate supply planes (VCC1, VCC0) to provide "instant on" and sophisticated system power management functions. The KBC1122P power control circuitry supports multiple low power-down modes.

-- The KBC1122P remote control inputs support all IR protocols required to be compliant with Windows Vista(TM) receiver hardware specifications in addition to protocols supported by previous versions of Windows(R) XP Media Center Edition. Certified CIR drivers for the KBC1122P are available directly from SMSC.

-- The KBC1122P also incorporates a DBM with SMSC SentinelAlert! accessible by the 8051. Together with external remote temperature sensor(s) the KBC1122P can provide a complete analog monitoring and control system. The KBC1122P DBM includes an 8 channel ADC, 3 channel DAC with SMSC SentinelAlert! and up to 2 SMSC SentinelAlert! GPIOs, two channel one-pin Temperature Sensor Communication Links, and a hardware protection output that requires no programming or 8051 intervention to operate.
