NFC Forum Sponsors Mobile Transactions Workshop at Mobile Internet World Conference and Expo in Boston
WAKEFIELD, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- The NFC Forum (www.nfc-forum.org), a non-profit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, today announced that it is sponsoring and participating in the Mobile Transactions Workshop at the Mobile Internet World Conference and Expo, October 22 at 2:30 PM, at the Boston, Massachusetts Convention & Exhibition Center.
The first session of the Mobile Transactions Workshop, "The Evolution of Inquiry to Interaction," will feature speakers Gerhard Romen, vice chairman of the NFC Forum and Director of Business Development, Nokia; Sean Moshir, CEO, Celltrust; and Jon Paisner, senior analyst, Yankee Group. The panelists will discuss how mobile banking is moving from simple telephone-based balance inquiries toward more diverse transactions in which the mobile device interacts directly with other physical devices, such as point-of-sale terminals, kiosks, and smart posters. Because NFC technology is key to this evolution, the presenters will address the benefits of NFC and the security protocols necessary to protect consumers' confidential financial data.
The second session, "No Card Required: Riding Mass Transit with Only Your Mobile Phone," will address the interrelationships of transit authorities, merchants, and financial institutions as NFC-enabled transit fare applications gain traction. Panelists will include Stephen Miles, chair of the MIT Enterprise Forum RFID Special Interest Group; Charlie Walton, executive vice president, INSIDE Contactless; and Hans Reisgies, director NFC Business Development, VIVOtech.
In the third session, "Access Control, Mobile Promotions and Payments," panelists will discuss innovative NFC applications that enable mobile phones to do everything from acting as electronic hotel room keys to serving as coupon distribution devices. Presenters will include Tim Jefferson, managing director, The Human Chain; Prakash Hariramani, senior business leader of Global Product Innovation, Visa; Ben Ackerman, vice president of business development for Firethorn, Qualcomm; and Joe Mendoza, director of marketing, North America Telecommunications, Gemalto.
As the Mobile Transactions market emerges, players are working together to ensure that they will all benefit from this growing trend. From online transactions to online auction houses, the convergence of the worlds of the Internet and telecom are creating many opportunities for commerce. Mobile payments using NFC, contactless POS terminals and mobile Internet retail sites are only a few examples of the technologies that carriers can effectively utilize through partnerships or by strategic agreements to increase their revenue stream.
"NFC technology brings the Internet into the physical world and complements the use of SMS for remote payments by adding the capability of contactless transactions, "said Gerhard Romen. "NFC's 'touch' technology easily sets up connections and transfers data, enabling users to access digital content intuitively. As the mobile Internet emerges and consumers begin to have direct access to the Internet, more and more users will use NFC to perform mobile transactions."
The Mobile Transactions Workshop was developed for financial industry executives and developers across the mobile transaction ecosystem, e-commerce professionals, carriers/operators and content providers, card associations, banks, merchants and device manufacturers. About Near Field Communication Technology
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based, short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables simple and safe two-way interactions between electronic devices. NFC technology allows consumers to perform contactless transactions, access digital content and connect devices with the simplicity of a single touch.
Near Field Communication (NFC) technology provides global interoperability of contactless identification and interconnection technologies. NFC operates in the 13.56 MHz frequency range, over a typical distance of a few centimeters. The underlying layers of NFC technology are based on ISO, ECMA, and ETSI standards. NFC technology is supported by the world's leading communication device manufacturers, semiconductor producers, network operators, IT and services companies, and financial services organizations. NFC is compatible with hundreds of millions of contactless cards and readers already deployed worldwide.
About the NFC Forum
The NFC Forum, www.nfc-forum.org, was launched as a non-profit industry association in 2004 by leading mobile communications, semiconductor and consumer electronics companies. The Forum's mission is to advance the use of Near Field Communication technology by developing specifications, ensuring interoperability among devices and services, and educating the market about NFC technology. The Forum's 150 global member companies currently are developing specifications for a modular NFC device architecture, and protocols for interoperable data exchange and device-independent service delivery, device discovery, and device capability.
The NFC Forum's Sponsor members, which hold seats on the Board of Directors, include leading players in key industries around the world. The Sponsor members are: HP, MasterCard Worldwide, Microsoft Corp., NEC, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Inc., NXP Semiconductors, Panasonic, Renesas Technology, Samsung, Sony Corporation, and Visa International.
