IMPORT TAX ON SECURITY GADGETS SHOULD BE CUT BY 50%: INDIAN ORG.
NEW DELHI - Industry body Assocham has
asked the Indian government to reduce import tariffs on
security-related electronic products by about 50 per cent to
strengthen the domestic security industry.
Currently, import duties on most electronic security gadgets
was about 37 per cent and the duty on telecom equipment was
about 12.5 per cent, making the installation of security
gadgets an expensive exercise, the chamber said.
JAPAN-MADE 150-INCH SCREEN'S SPEAKERS PROVIDE THEATER-LIKE SOUND
TOKYO - A joint venture between Kenwood
Corp. and Victor Co. of Japan, or JVC, has developed a 150-inch
screen with built-in speakers that projects sound in a similar
fashion to movie theater screens.
According to J&K Technologies Corp., a screen of up to 300
inches in size can be produced. The technology development
company plans to commercialize the product within a year, after
gauging demand.
PANASONIC TO DEBUT 1ST FULLY PAPERLESS FAX
TOKYO - Panasonic Corp. (TSE:6752) will
offer the first fax machines that enable users to both send and
receive messages without using paper.
The KX-PW 608 series, which goes on sale Jan. 23, allows
users to type their messages using built-in telephone keypads,
similar to sending an e-mail using a cellular phone. In
addition, electronic documents in Microsoft Word or other
formats can be transmitted using accompanying software.
NOJIMA TO HIRE UP TO 50 NEW GRADUATES AFTER CANCELED JOB OFFERS
TOKYO - Electronics retailer Nojima
Corp. (TSE:7419) plans to hire this spring as many as 50

upcoming graduates who had accepted job offers from other
employers only to see them rescinded due to deteriorating
economic conditions.
Nojima, which will step up efforts to open new stores,
sees the current economic downturn as an opportune time to hire
talent.
INDIA'S SURYA ROSHNI TO PUMP IN US$21 MLN TO SET UP PLANT
JAIPUR - Indian lighting solution provider
Surya Roshni Ltd (BSE:500336) is planning to invest Rs 100
crore (US$20.7 million) in setting up a lamp manufacturing
plant at Malanpur, Gwalior with an aim to achieve Rs
1,500-crore (US$311.3 million) turnover in the next three
years.
"We are also planning to generate 2000 jobs in 2009. The new
plant, which will manufacture mainly CFL lamps, high masts and
street lights, is expected to be commissioned by the end of
2009," the company's managing director J P Agrawal has said.
INDONESIA POWER CO PLN HOPES TO REDUCE NET LOSSES IN 2009
JAKARTA - State-owned electricity company
PLN said it hopes to reduce net losses 17.35 per cent from an
estimated Rp6.57 trillion (US$657 million) last year to Rp5.43
trillion, despite a falling income this year.
In 2008 the operating income of the company was predicted to
reach only Rp155.23 trillion, down from Rp166.34 trillion last
year after a big subsidy cut to Rp64.46 trillion from Rp86
trillion, it said.
